Suggestions?
Ok, so while I have a "fairly" competent gaming rig for now, I can see I'll be needing something a bit more beefy to handle this generation's and next generation's (and sadly some for last generation's) games. I did a little research on competitively-priced desktops, the more high-end gaming-rig labeled machines from the usual brands, and am unimpressed with the specs offered for their price points.
So, I've decided to build my machine, again. Now, I've been out of the loop on various industry technical advancements for a few years, but I know we have quite a number of tech minded persons here, I was wondering what any of your suggestions might be for build parts?
To save money, I'll be using what parts from my prior box that I can. So I hope I only really need to buy the MoBo, CPU, Graphics card, and Memory. Here's what I expect to salvage: -'NZXT' ATX size Case with five 5.25" Drive bays, two 3.5" floppy bays, fan-cooled four slot hard-drive caddy, 4 total case fans -680 Watt Raidmax Volcano PSU (fairly sure it's not SLI ready) -Creative SB Audigy 4 PCI -Linksys 'WMP300N' Wireless-N PCI -Toshiba DVD-RW -9-in-1 Ultra Multi-Card/Floppy drive
I'm really not concerned with brands, only prices, tho I do lean more towards Intel CPUs, and nVidia GPUs... I still want this a budget-minded buy, so going "all out" is just not in the cards here. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Ty Mesk. I know, not counting ATi out, just unfamiliar territory. At least with nVidia, I understand the benchmarks and naming scheme a bit better. I'll give Radeons another look.
Btw, ballpark figure, what did your setup set you back?
Are there any compatibility issues with ATi cards and motherboards with nVidia memory controllers and chipsets?

While I do not do this stuff (can barely change a lightbulb, I read the anantech site all the time. Here is their most recent guide to building a decent gaming rig for under 1000.00 dollars. Page 4 for intel, page 5 for amd. www.anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.aspx?i=3739
